Things To Consider When Getting Breast Augmentation Surgery

When a person is unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts, it can have a huge impact on their self-esteem. Some people feel very negative about themselves and fear that others see them in a negative way as well. For this reason, many patients have decided to have breast augmentation surgery. This type of surgery can dramatically change the appearance of one's breasts and give the boost in confidence that many people need.

However, having breast augmentation surgery does not mean simply going to a doctor and asking to have breast implants. There are different aspects of the surgery that can determine what the final results are. These are some things to consider when having breast augmentation surgery.

The Shape of the Implant

Breast implants are typically available in two shapes. These are round shapes and teardrop shapes. Round-shaped implants usually give a more natural appearance to the breasts. However, for some patients, such as those who have had partial mastectomies, the teardrop shape may be the best fit. The shape of natural breasts often helps determine which shape of breast implant is most ideal for each patient.

The Surface of the Implant

Breast implants are also made with the option of two different types of surfaces. One is a textured surface that has small bumps all along the outside surface of the implant. These implants were developed to help prevent capsular contracture from occurring, in which the scar tissue that grows around the implant makes it feel tight and uncomfortable. Implants are also made with a smooth surface that does not have the small bumps on the surface. Smooth-surfaced implants give the breasts a more natural, softer feel.

The Filler of the Implant

Another thing that one should consider is what type of filler they prefer the implants to have. The two filler options available are silicone gel and saline solution. Silicone gel gives the breasts a more natural feel, however, saline is sometimes considered a safer choice. If the exterior of a saline implant were to break and the saline leaked out, the body would simply absorb the saline and the implant would deflate. If a silicone implant were to erupt, the gel is not absorbed and the patient might not be aware of the silicone that was leaking out.

It is also important to know which placement of the implants is best before having breast augmentation. The options for placement include subglandular, which is behind the breast tissue, or submuscular, which is behind the chest muscles. Those who want to greatly increase the size of their breasts often choose submuscular and those who want to reduce sagging in their breasts often prefer subglandular.
